Artist Statement
My work centers around identity and the relationships that I have with others. I am also fascinated by history and how I can communicate it figuratively. I am not concerned with each piece being entirely diaristic, but rather a most accurate portrayal of just my perspective. My work is created through a very layered process often consisting of paper media, collage, and scrapbook materials. Throughout my work and use of materiality there are also explorations of personal memory. My methodical mark making grounds each piece to some sort of reality despite other surreal aspects. I gravitate towards bright and bold tones for the work, bringing a sense of energy and emotion. Ideas of femininity also underscore my work in my most common subject of the female form. Through my measured use of abstraction and more contemporary painting methods, I look to engage in both contemporary and historical dialogues. By integrating my personal, still-developing symbology, the work remains mysterious.
